EAL online course format
Requiring approximately 100 hours to complete over a six month period, our extended EAL online course provides the opportunity to examine a range of EAL issues in detail, studying at times that suit your schedule.

Course aim
- Raise awareness of the practical and theoretical issues surrounding the achievement of ethnic minority pupils including pupils with English as an additional language, both those new to English and more advanced learners.

The course
- Has four compulsory units and offers a choice for the last two units
- Addresses the linguistic and social issues relating to recent arrivals who are new to English
- Explores assessment and tracking of EAL learners
- Considers ways in which we can develop the academic language of more advanced EAL learners
- Shows you where to find key data about EAL learners and how to use that data
- Allows you to choose from a range of key EAL issues that you want to pursue further
On successful completion of this course a participant will be able to
- Demonstrate an understanding of the key issues in the national and international debates around the achievement and assessment of pupils learning English as an additional language
- Consider, plan and evaluate effective support for the learning and language development of beginner and advanced learners of English as an additional language
- Demonstrate an understanding of the factors that are likely to affect the emotional, social and academic development of newly arrived pupils in the country and in UK schools
